{"id":502,"date":"2024-09-19T17:08:25","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T17:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iims.uthscsa.edu\/exito\/?page_id=502"},"modified":"2024-10-03T12:56:19","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T12:56:19","slug":"what-is-exito","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iims.uthscsa.edu\/exito\/what-is-exito\/","title":{"rendered":"What is \u00c9xito?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the top Latino killer, making it critical to develop the next generation of researchers who can tackle and solve Latino cancer issues.<\/div>\n<p>But few Latinos seek doctoral degrees and study biomedical and behavioral science.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9xito! <\/em><em>Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training<\/em>, launched in 2010 by the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at UT\u00a0Health San Antonio thanks to a grant from the National Cancer Institute, offers an annual summer institute to increase the number of master\u2019s-degree-level Latinos who pursue a doctoral degree and a career in Latino health disparities and cancer control research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An annual 5-day Summer Institute, \u201cCareers in Latino Cancer Health Disparities Research,\u201d discusses research strategies and Latino cancer health disparities, and provides inspiration and tools to apply to a doctoral program. See a sample <a href=\"https:\/\/exitotraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2024\/09\/Summer-Institute-Agenda-Overview.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Summer Institute agenda<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Institute aim to enhance participants\u2019:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding of the power of research to affect change.<\/li>\n<li>Awareness of current research methods, theories, and interventions to reduce Latino cancer health disparities.<\/li>\n<li>Interest in cancer control research, from surveillance to epidemiology, individual behavior change, health services, and policy research.<\/li>\n<li>Skills in research, networking, and motivation to successfully apply to a doctoral program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minority Latino\/Hispanic student (defined as being from an underrepresented community that experiences an excess or unknown burden in the field of health disparities and cancer control research) in a master\u2019s-level health program (with a minimum completion of that program\u2019s first semester by June 2017) or a master\u2019s-trained health professional.<\/p>\n<p>Current doctoral students or those accepted into doctoral programs are not eligible.<\/p>\n<p>Other criteria include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good academic standing (minimum \u201cB\u201d average).<\/li>\n<li>Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internships\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paid Internships<\/li>\n<li>Ten internships are available to individuals accepted into the <em>\u00c9xito! <\/em>program and who attend the Summer Institute.<\/li>\n<li>In order to receive an internship individual must complete the <em>\u00c9xito!<\/em> online application which includes the submission of an internship work plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for an\u00a0<em>\u00c9xito!\u00a0<\/em>Internship you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for and be accepted to attend the Summer Institute.<\/li>\n<li>Be an alumnus of the\u00a0<em>\u00c9xito!\u00a0<\/em>program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Individuals are ineligible if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They have completed or are currently enrolled in a doctoral program.<\/li>\n<li>They have already been accepted into a doctoral program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9xito! <\/em>is funded from 2015-2021\u00a0(and previously from 2010-2015) by a National Cancer Institute grant.<\/p>\n<p>The program is directed by Dr. Amelie G.
