Alan Pearson, RN, ONC, DipNEd, MSc, PhD, FRCNA, FCN, FAAG, FRCN, is Professor of Evidence-Based Healthcare at the University of Adelaide, Executive Director of the Joanna Briggs Institute, and Editor of the International Journal of Nursing Practice.
Professor Pearson has extensive experience in clinical practice in the United Kingdom, the United States, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. He has been the recipient of a number of competitive and commissioned research grants from the Monument Trust, Alzheimer’s Australia, the National Heart Foundation, the Australian Government Department of Health, the Australian Research Council, and the National Health and Medical Research Council. He has led commissioned systematic reviews of evidence for Health Canada; the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing; the Department of Education, Science & Training; the South Australian Department of Health; and the Cancer Councils of Australia. He recently led a team that completed five systematic reviews for the National Health and Medical Research Council to support the development of new clinical practice guidelines for infection control, as well as a systematic review of Patient Safety in Primary Care for the Australian Commission on Safety in Healthcare.
In the field of aged care and ageing, Professor Pearson has conducted a number of Commonwealth-funded consultancies. He has served on or chaired a number of Commonwealth groups and has been a Chair of the Aged Care Complaints Resolution Scheme since its inception. He is Expert Adviser to the World Health Organization’s World Alliance on Patient Safety, Coordinator of the Cochrane Nursing Care Network, a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (UK), and a Fellow of the Australian Association of Gerontology.
As Executive Director of the Joanna Briggs Institute, Professor Pearson is actively involved in advancing evidence-based healthcare in many countries, including the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, 14 African countries, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Belgium, Finland, Romania, the United Kingdon, and throughout Australasia. He has published 20 books, more than 40 book chapters, and more than 120 refereed journal articles.
Professor Pearson was recently appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours List on January 26, 2010.
