Stephen R. Mayfield, DHA, MBA, MBB, serves as Vice President for Quality and Performance Improvement for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Dr. Mayfield has worked with hospitals and health systems across the country to bring together the triad of boards, physician leaders and hospital administration in order to improve the delivery of care in communities while enhancing patient outcomes and safety. He has directed the national Patient Safety Leaders Fellowship program and serves as faculty. His work focus areas include: engaging leadership in hospitals to employ systems thinking to cultivate process excellence; the innovative applications of health information technology (H.I.T.) to improve care; the role of balanced measurement systems and quality indices in support of aligning organizational efforts to improve performance and increase transparency; and the applications of Lean/Six Sigma as methods to reduce costs of poor quality while improving work flow and patient flow.

Dr. Mayfield completed his Doctorate in Health Administration and Leadership at the Medical University of South Carolina, earned an MBA from Emory University’s Goizuetta Business School and a B.S. from Georgia State University. Steve is a Master Black Belt, certified in Lean and Six Sigma. He serves as faculty for Lean/Six Sigma methods for the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He serves on the board for the California Hospital Patient Safety Organization (CHPSO) and is a member of the Quality Committee. Steve is a board member for the Baldrige Award Alliance. He is a Senior Member and active in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the American Society for Quality, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Steve is a Contributing Editor to the Industrial Engineering Terminology ANSI Standards for Health Systems. Prior to his career in healthcare, Steve worked at the Georgia Tech Research Institute in the Human Factors division of the Systems Engineering Laboratory.
