Practical Optical Microscopy
CSAT 5083 (formerly CSBL 5083) Practical Optical Microscopy
Staff, postdoc, and faculty are welcome to attend for $30 auditing fee
For students taking this for credit, CSBL 5083 is: 1.0 Semester Credit Hour
This course will be a one-hour elective for graduate students consisting of eight (8) one-hour lectures plus eight (8) one-hour laboratories. The course focuses on the practical aspects of using optical microscopes. The objectives are to teach students the fundamental principles of optical microscopy and to provide them with hands-on experience using the optical instrumentation in the Institutional Imaging Core.
The class dates are Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning July 3 through July 26, 2018. The first 4 lectures will be held from 12:00 noon – 12:50 p.m. in 2.010 (under the Library/Lecture Hall Foyer), and the first four lab demonstrations will be held during 1 hour blocks (sessions) between 1:00 and 4:00 pm in 2.518U (Dental School Bldg, Main campus). Each student only needs to attend one of the lab sessions. The last 4 lectures will be held at the STRF 3rd floor conference room 300.03 with labs in STRF 252. Space in the lab demonstrations is limited and first choice will be given to registered students.
Below is a schedule of lectures:
July 3 Geometric Optics
July 5 Optical Contrast Methods
July 10 Principles of Fluorescence Imaging
July 12 Digital Detectors
July 17 Confocal Microscopy
July 19 Multiphoton Microscopy
July 24 Specialized Techniques, FRET, Super-Resolution, Ca2+
July 26 Image Analysis
