Abstract

Purpose

Develop nursing leaders across the organization in order to create a professional practice environment.

Background

The complexities of healthcare demand new leadership approaches to achieve organizational goals.

Materials & Methods

Leadership Development for Nursing was focused on contemporary issues in healthcare, evidence-based content, professional organization recommendations, and knowledge of self through assessment. With the use of the American Organization of Nurse Executive’s (AONE) Nurse Manager Inventory Tool (NMIT), a competency assessment was completed to identify, prioritize and develop leadership competencies for the bedside and leadership nursing staff in a 110 bed acute care facility. The competencies were ranked along a Likert scale from 1 – 5, utilizing Patricia Banners’ scoring of novice to expert, with 1 being novice and 5 being expert. Nursing leadership staff and staff nurse members performed a self assessment of their leadership skills. Mean scores were obtained for the attributes in the domain of “The Leader Within”. Education and training to nursing leaders and front line staff were provided in tandem in the area of personal and professional accountability, career planning, and personal journey disciplines. A repeat assessment was performed measuring the competencies identified in the NMIT domain of “The Leader Within”.

Results indicate increased mean score in attributes for the domain of “The Leader Within” in both staff and nurse leaders in the organization.

Conclusion

Concurrent leadership development supports the development of a professional practice environment. Ongoing didactic and leadership development has been applied to the Shared Governance process.
