Abstract

Purpose

Development of oral care protocol in patients with head and neck cancer after oral surgery

Background

Srinagarind Hospital has patients with head and neck cancer about 121 case each year. Almost of this patients need surgery. After oral surgery patients have pain, wound swelling so it is difficult to clean the mouth. Contamination of saliva, sputum and discharge from the wound cause of risk of wound infection, patients had bad breath, decrease in appetite. an embarrassment There are many ways to clean the mouth, but which one is the best way for our patients.

Materials & Methods

This is the quasi experimental study. The sample population were 52 patients who had oral cancer surgery between August 2011 to February 2012.Patients were well prepared before and after surgery for oral cavity hygiene care. We developed and modified tools/technique for oral care and assessment form, we assessment tongue, gums, teeth, the mouth and wound. Assessment the oral cavity hygiene and the wound at 06, 13, and 18 hours Data analysis by means.

Results

The oral hygiene of patients level is high score ,no bad breath. 93% of patients were satisfied with the protocol of oral care and feel more comfortable.

Conclusion

The tools/technique and assessment form are good for patients with oral cavity surgery. Patients more comfortable when they use our tools/technique.
