Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this poster is to discuss valuable lessons learned by Children’s nursing research team in order to share their experience with other research teams who may be interested in future ISRN collaborative studies.

Background

A research team composed of pediatric medical surgical nurses volunteered to participate the second wave of ISRN’s national multisite study called Small Troubles Adaptive Responses (STAR- 2). At present, data collection has been completed and the review for data quality is ongoing.

Materials & Methods

Upon conclusion of data collection and data entry, study team members were asked to contribute any suggestions for improvement or lessons learned from their experience in the STAR 2 study. This information was summarized and will be shared to support the valuable experience of research collaboration.

Results

Collaboration provides in depth learning experiences for direct care nurses who are expert in patient care delivery though inexperienced about participating in multisite research studies.  Guided by ISRN research experts and following a process trialed in phase one of the STAR 2 study, the majority of RN study participants completed both pocket cards and study booklets. Using provided spread sheets and a study data base, data entry was completed within the required time frame.

Conclusion

Overall, the experience was positive for the principle investigator, the co-investigators and research team members from participating pediatric medical surgical units. A list of suggested improvements for communication and data entry as well as a table illustrating positive contributions of study participation will be used to create a poster presentation for the 2014 ISRN Summit.
