About Us

Our Mission

The South Texas Psychiatry PBRN conducts collaborative, practice-based research. Our network unites psychiatric professionals from San Antonio, surrounding counties, Laredo, and the Rio Grande Valley with investigators at the University of Texas Health San Antonio. Together, we develop and refine research questions that are meaningful to both clinicians and patients. Network members conduct research within their own practices and communities, ensuring studies reflect real-world settings and diverse patient populations. The network aims to strengthen research relevance and improve the quality of psychiatric care across South Texas.

A Brief History of the Network

The South Texas Psychiatric Practice-Based Network (PBRN) was founded by Dr. Cervando Martinez in 2009. Since then, the network has grown into an organization of community clinicians who collaborate together with UT Health Researchers and it is now led by Melissa Deuter, MD. Dr. Deuter is a private psychiatrist in San Antonio, Texas. This PBRN has a versatile membership of adult, child, and even forensic Psychiatrists. To our knowledge, this network is one of few, if not the only, local Psychiatric research networks in the United States. The network currently receives funding from the NIH.
