Lloyd Van Winkle, MD, FAAFP

Chairman

Lloyd Van Winkle, MD, FAAFP is a family physician in Castroville, Texas and is chair of STARNet’s Board of Directors. He is a past-president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and currently serves on the TAFP Political Action Committee. His research interests include obesity prevention and fitness, health information technology, and applications of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).

Mitch Finnie, MD, FAAFP

Treasurer

Mitch Finnie, MD, FAAFP is a family physician in San Antonio, Texas and is secretary/treasurer of the STARNet Board of Directors. His research interests include atherosclerosis prevention, diabetes, and obesity prevention.

Carlos Campos, MD, MPH, FAAFP

Board Member

Carlos Campos, MD, MPH, FAAFP is a family physician in New Braunfels, Texas, is the Executive Director of The Institute for Public Health and Education Research, and Medical Director of the Resolute Health Diabetes Center. His research interests include diabetes, cultural competency, and community outreach health promotions.

Abigail Barrera, MD is a family physician in San Antonio, Texas and is located in the southern part of the city.  Her research interests include diabetes, point-of-care testing, and evidence-based guidelines.

Abilio Munoz, MD, FAAFP is a solo family physician in Austin, Texas. His research interests include diet and diabetes, promoting physical activity, and osteopenia.

Walter L. Calmbach, MD, MPH, FAAFP

Biosketch

Walter L. Calmbach, MD, MPH is a professor in the Dept. of Family & Community Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  He is the founder and Clinical Co-Director of the South Texas Ambulatory Research Network (STARNet), and is actively involved in local and national research projects with this research network. He currently serves as chair of the steering committee of the Federation of South Texas Ambulatory Research Networks, a national organization representing PBRN’s around the country.  Dr. Calmbach also directs the Primary Care Research Methods & Statistics Conference, a meeting funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) aimed at presenting new and emerging methods of primary care research. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine, and his primary clinical interest is in primary care sports medicine. His primary research interests include physical activity promotion and methods related to practice-based research networks.
