Named for Frederic C. Bartter M.D. (September 10, 1914 – May 5, 1983), an American endocrinologist best known for his work on hormones affecting the kidneys and his discovery of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone and Bartter syndrome, the Bartter Center Clinical Research Unit (BCRU) is a collaborative effort between STVHCS and UTH-SA offering investigators a variety of resources to support diverse, patient-oriented research studies involving Veterans in the South Texas Region.

The BCRU dedicates approximately 6,000 square feet of space on the 7th floor of the STVHCS Hospital, with 16 inpatient and outpatient exam rooms, a nursing station, laboratory space, records storage, and office space.  The unit is capable of providing research services 24 hours a day, 5 days per week. 

Skilled nursing personnel receive annual Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) and follow Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Code of Federal Regulations.  The BCRU supports clinical research ranging from Phase I through Phase IV and services adult populations in all clinical specialties.
